Introduction: What is Asphalt?
Asphalt is a black, sticky, and highly viscous liquid or semi-solid form of petroleum. It is used primarily in road construction and roofing. How to Calculate the Quantity of Dump Trucks in Asphalt
Asphalt is a black, sticky, and highly viscous liquid or semi-solid form of petroleum. It is used primarily in road construction and roofing. Asphalt’s color comes from being mixed with small pieces of rock or mineral aggregate to make it more durable in the ground.
Difference Between Asphalt and Bitumen?
Asphalt vs Bitumen:
Asphalt is a mixture of sand, aggregates, and bitumen. In asphalt, bitumen is used as a binder to hold together the asphalt, which are then heated to high temperatures so that they can be laid down on roads or other surfaces.
Bitumen is the most important ingredient in asphalt. It is a black, sticky, and viscous liquid. Bitumen is often called as “the glue that holds together” asphalt.
What are the Types of Asphalt?
-
Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA): Generally hot asphalt mixes are produced at a temperature between 150 to 180 0C. Different asphalt mixtures can be used on the basis of the usage and their application area. It is mostly used for paving and patching. It is easier to work with asphalts when their temperature is high. It needs to be used immediately after the purchase and it is a permanent solution to all the paving and patching problems. How to Calculate the Quantity of Dump Trucks in Asphalt
-
MC cold mix: It is temporary used asphalt and is used for a temporary fix. As it is used in a cold form thus its temperature is also cold and therefore it has a slow cure. Thus it is best fit in the areas that have very minimal or no traffic at all.
-
UPM: It is also a cold asphalt, but unlike the MC cold mix it is used for the permanent solution to any of the asphalt mix or concrete problems. It is made durable for any weather conditions and can witness any traffic load. Thus it is used to fix both the dry and the wet holes. This makes the repair in any condition really easy. It is immediately ready to be tread upon once the asphalt is compacted.
-
Warm Mix: As it is mixed and shipped when it is at a lower temperature thus it is not cooled off as faster as the hot mix. It is easier to pour and spread due to the emulsion used in it. Quantity of Asphalt for Irregular Road Section
-
Cut back asphalt: Cut back asphalt materials are asphalt cement as well as petroleum solvent. It has a decreased viscosity and thickness and because of this property, it is being preferred over other asphalts. It is restricted in many areas as it contains some volatile materials. -
Mastic asphalt: It is a dense and durable formulation of asphalt and is also a waterproofing medium in itself. The mastic asphalt materials consist of stone fillers, a mixture of asphalt and mineral powder that is heated and mixed at high temperatures.
How do you Calculate the Quantity of an Asphalt?
Calculating the amount of asphalt in a given mix is not as straightforward as it may seem. There are many factors that need to be taken into account, such as the type of asphalt, its thickness, and the density. Quantity of Asphalt for Irregular Road Section
In this article we will explore how to calculate the quantity of an asphalt in road:
Given Data (Example):
Length of Road = L = 10 Km = 1000 m
Width of Road = W = 12 m
Thickness of Asphalt Layer = H = 15 cm = 0.15 m Quantity of Asphalt Base Course
Formula for Asphalt Calculation:
- Volume of Asphalt = L x W x H
- Density of Asphalt: Depending on the type of mix(Dense graded vs Open Graded) 2300 Kg to 2400 Kg/cubic meter or 135 lb-145 lb/cft is good number to use for estimating purpose. But here are using 2400 Kg/m3.
- Quantity of Asphalt = Volume of Asphalt x Density of Asphalt
- Quantity of Asphalt in Tons (For Road) = Quantity of Asphalt / 1000
Quantity of Asphalt Calculation:
Volume of Asphalt = L x W x H = 10000 x 12 x 0.15 = 18000 Cum
Here, the Density of Asphalt is taken as 2400 kg/m3
The Quantity of Asphalt = Volume of Asphalt x Density of Asphalt
The Quantity of Asphalt = 18000 x 2400 = 43200000 Kg
Quantity of Asphalt in Tons = Quantity of Asphalt / 1000
Quantity of Asphalt for Road in Tons = 43200000 / 1000 = 432000 Tons
How To Calculate the Quantity of Dump Trucks in Asphalt:
Quantity of Asphalt for Road in Tons = 432000 Tones
Let’s Say Volume of Single Asphalt Truck = 25 Tons
No. of Asphalt Dump Trucks = Quantity of Asphalt / Volume of Dump Truck
No. of Asphalt Dump Trucks = 432000 / 25 = 17280 Nos (Dump Trucks)
How to Calculate the Quantity of an Asphalt in Curved Road?
Formula for Calculation of Asphalt in Curved Road:
- Length of Curved Road = L = (Pi x R x θ) / 180
- Volume of Asphalt = L x W x H
- Density of Asphalt: Depending on the type of mix(Dense graded vs Open Graded) 2300 Kg to 2400 Kg/cubic meter or 135 lb-145 lb/cft is good number to use for estimating purpose. But here are using 2400 Kg/m3.
- Quantity of Asphalt = Volume of Asphalt x Density of Asphalt
- Quantity of Asphalt in Tons (For Road) = Quantity of Asphalt / 1000
Given Data (Example):
Radius of Road = L = 10 m
Angle of Radius = θ = 100 Deg
Width of Road = W = 12 m
Thickness of Asphalt Layer = H = 15 cm = 0.15 m
Quantity of Asphalt Calculation:
Length of Curved Road = L = (Pi x R x θ) / 180 = (3.14 x 10 x 100) / 180
Length of Curved Road = L = 17.44 m Quantity of Asphalt Base Course
Volume of Asphalt for Curved Road = Length (L) x Width (W) x Thickness (H)
Volume of Asphalt for Curved Road = 17.44 x 12 x 0.15 = 31.40 Cum
Quantity of Asphalt for Curved Road = Volume of Asphalt x Density of Asphalt
Quantity of Asphalt for Curved Road = 31.40 x 2400 = 75360 Kg
Quantity of Asphalt for Curved Road in Tons = 75360 / 1000 = 75.36 Tons
How to Calculate the Quantity of an Asphalt for Irregular Road Section?
In case the area you are calculating has an irregular shape, divide it into several regularly-shaped sections, then calculate each of their volume and asphalt requirements using the following method:
Given Data (Example):
Length of Road = L = 50 m
Width of Road = W = 5 m
Width of Triangular Portion = 3 m
Radius of Sami-Circular Portion = 18 m
Thickness of Asphalt Layer = H = 90 mm = 0.09 m
Quantity of Asphalt Calculation for Irregular Area Pavement:
Area of Triangle = (b x h) / 2 = (5 x 3) / 2 = 7.5 m2
Area of Radius Portion = (Pi x D x D) / 2 = (3.143 x 10 x 10) / 2 = 157 m2
Area of Rectangle = L x B = 50 x 5 = 250 m2
Total Area of Pavement = 7.5 + 157 + 250 = 141.50 m2
Volume of Asphalt = Area of Pavement x Thickness of Pavement
Volume of Asphalt = 141.50 x 0.09 = 12.735 Cum
Density of Asphalt = 2400 Kg/m3 Quantity of Asphalt Base Course
Quantity of Asphalt = Volume of Asphalt x Density of Asphalt
Quantity of Asphalt for Irregular Area Pavement = 12.735 x 2400 = 30564 Kg
Quantity of Asphalt for Irregular Area Pavement in Tonnes = Quantity of Asphalt / 1000
Quantity of Asphalt for Irregular Area Pavement in Tonnes = 30564 / 1000 = 30.564 Tons
How to Calculate the Quantity Bitumen in Road?
Approx. 3.5% to 5% bitumen is normal content for road construction. So the first clue how much bitumen is in the mixture of asphalt, then the dimension of the road should be identified (For calculating the volume of bitumen in 1 KM road, Width & thickness is needed). Quantity of Asphalt Wearing Course
Formula for Calculation of Bitumen Quantity in Road:
- Find out the dimension (Width and thickness)
- Calculate Volume of Asphalt = (Long * Width * Thickness) m^3
- Find out the density of Asphalt (2330 or 2400 Kg/m^3)
- Calculate the quantity of Asphalt= ( Density* Volume)/1000
- Find out how much bitumen in the mixture (3.5-5% in Asphalt)
- Calculate the quantity of bitumen for Road = (Quantity of Asphalt * 3.5 %)
Given Data (Example):
Length of Road = L = 1 Km = 1000 m
Width of Road = W = 7 m
Thickness of Asphalt Layer = H = 75 mm = 0.075 m
Quantity of Bitumen Calculation in Road:
Therefore, the Volumetric Quantity of Road Section = V = L x W x H
Volume of Road = 1000 x 7 x 0.075 = 525 Cum
Quantity of Mix Required for Road = Volume of Road x Density of Asphalt
Here, we consider the Density of Asphalt is 2400 Kg/m3
Quantity of Mix Required for Road = 525 x 2400 = 1260000 Kg
Quantity of Mix Required for Road in Tons = Quantity of Mix / 1000
Quantity of Mix Required for Road in Tons = 1260000 / 1000 = 1260 Tons
Bitumen Content = 3.4% (Taken from Bitumen Extraction Test)
Total Quantity of Bitumen Required for Road = Quantity of Mix x 3.4%
Total Quantity of Bitumen Required for Road = 1260 x 0.034 = 42.84 Tons
How to Calculate the Quantity of an Asphalt Using Compaction Factor?
Note: We will use this method when we are going to find the lose material from compacted material
How To Find The Quantity of Asphalt Wearing Course (AWC):
Formula for Calculation of AWC in Road:
- Find out the dimension (Width and thickness)
- Calculate Volume of Asphalt = (Long * Width * Thickness) m^3
- Find out the density of Asphalt (145 lbs/cft to 2330 Kg/m3)
- Calculate the quantity of Asphalt= ( Density* Volume)/1000
- Use the Compaction Factor for AWC (1.28% – 1.30% in Asphalt)
- Total Weight of Asphalt with Compaction Factor = Quantity of AWC x Compaction Factor
- Calculate No of Dump Trucks = Total Weight of AWC Asphalt in Tones / Material in One Dump Truck
Given Data (Example):
Length of Road = L = 100 m
Width of Road = W = 20 m
Thickness of Asphalt Layer = H = 50 mm = 0.050 m
Quantity of Asphalt Wearing Course Calculation in Road:
Therefore, the Volumetric Quantity of AWC Section = V = L x W x H
Volume of AWC = 100 x 20 x 0.050 = 100 Cum
Here, we use a standard Density of Asphalt is 145 lbs/cft or 2330 Kg/m3 which may be somewhat different depending on the precise asphalt mixture.
Quantity of AWC = Volume of AWC x Density of Asphalt
Quantity of AWC = 100 x 2330 = 233000 Kg
Compaction Factor (1.28 to 1.30) = 1.30 %
Total Weight of Asphalt with Compaction Factor = Quantity of AWC x Compaction Factor
Total Weight of AWC Asphalt with Compaction Factor (Lose Material) = 233000 x 1.3 = 302900 Kg
Total Weight of AWC Asphalt in Tones = Total Weight of AWC Asphalt with Compaction Factor / 1000
Total Weight of AWC Asphalt in Tones = 302900 / 1000 = 302.900 Tons
Material in One Dump Truck = 24 Ton
No of Dump Trucks = Total Weight of AWC Asphalt in Tones / Material in One Dump Truck
No of Dump Trucks = 302.900 / 24 = 12.62 Trucks
How To Find The Quantity of Asphalt Base Course (ABC):
Formula for Calculation of ABC in Road:
- Find out the dimension (Width and thickness)
- Calculate Volume of Asphalt = (Long * Width * Thickness) m^3
- Find out the density of Asphalt (145 lbs/cft to 2330 Kg/m3)
- Calculate the quantity of Asphalt= ( Density* Volume)/1000
- Use the Compaction Factor for AWC (1.23% – 1.26% in Asphalt)
- Total Weight of Asphalt with Compaction Factor = Quantity of AWC x Compaction Factor
- Calculate No of Dump Trucks = Total Weight of AWC Asphalt in Tones / Material in One Dump Truck
Given Data (Example):
Length of Road = L = 100 m
Width of Road = W = 20 m
Thickness of Asphalt Layer = H = 75 mm = 0.075 m
Quantity of Asphalt Wearing Course Calculation in Road:
Therefore, the Volumetric Quantity of AWC Section = V = L x W x H
Volume of AWC = 100 x 20 x 0.075 = 150 Cum
Here, we use a standard Density of Asphalt is 145 lbs/cft or 2330 Kg/m3 which may be somewhat different depending on the precise asphalt mixture.
Quantity of AWC = Volume of AWC x Density of Asphalt
Quantity of AWC = 150 x 2330 = 349500 Kg
Compaction Factor (1.23 to 1.26) = 1.24 %
Total Weight of Asphalt with Compaction Factor = Quantity of AWC x Compaction Factor
Total Weight of AWC Asphalt with Compaction Factor (Lose Material) = 349500 x 1.24 = 433380 Kg
Total Weight of AWC Asphalt in Tones = Total Weight of AWC Asphalt with Compaction Factor / 1000
Total Weight of AWC Asphalt in Tones = 433380 / 1000 = 433.380 Tons
Material in One Dump Truck = 24 Ton
No of Dump Trucks = Total Weight of AWC Asphalt in Tones / Material in One Dump Truck
No of Dump Trucks = 433.380 / 24 = 18.06 Trucks
