Fill, Select-Fill and Marl Cap Materials Receiving Inspection | Earthwork – Site Preparation, Excavation and Backfilling | General Fill | Engineered Fill | Structural Fill:

In this article we will discuss about Fill, Select-Fill and Marl Cap Material Receiving Inspection | Earthwork Site Preparation | Earthwork Excavation and Backfilling | General Fill | Engineered Fill | Structural Fill.

Fill Materials:

  • Gravel, sand and/or marl materials-maximum size shall be 75mm. Note: If ½ of lift thickness is less than 75mm, the maximum sieve size allowed shall be equal to ½ of lift thickness.
  • Delivered fill materials shall be free of frozen lumps, organic material, trash, chunks of highly plastic clay or other unsatisfactory materials.
  • ‘Fill Material’ shall be used for all fills except where ‘Select Fill Material’ is specified. As a minimum, ‘Select Fill Material’ shall be used within 0.6 m (2 ft) of the bottom elevation of foundations, spread footings, or slabs-on-grade when fill is required to achieve final grade. ‘Select Fill Material’ shall also be specified for backfill which will be in contact with concrete or steel structures.

Select Fill Materials:

  • Maximum size of sand and gravel materials being received shall be 50mm diameter particles.
  • Select fill are composed only of inorganic materials and are free of frozen lumps, trash, or other unsatisfactory materials.

Marl Cap Materials:

  • Maximum size of marl materials being received shall be 75mm. Note: If ½ of lift thickness is less than 75mm, the max. sieve size allowed shall be equal to ½ of lift thickness.
  • Delivered fill materials shall be free of organic material, trash, or other unsatisfactory materials.
